Good morning, afternoon, and evening!

We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)

I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.

Ta for now!

I was born in the cold.
I used to place my two feet on the ground, as I was told.
But my father was too cold,
my brother was too cold.
My mother was the only one I could hold.

And as I grew old, my life began to fold.
I found myself in a depressing stranglehold—
shaken, and crying without a foothold.

So I remembered times of old—
playing in a field where nothing was cold.
I would watch a bee pick a marigold.

As memories unfold,
I realized what was taking hold:
I grew up in a harsh household—
grim and cold, I was controlled.

Never in my life had I been told
that fate only sings for the bold.
And, as foretold,
I took off my blindfold.

I enrolled my grief and was consoled.
I left by myself, and I was tolled.
And to show the values I uphold,
I paid it tenfold.

Now my soul remains unsold.
Where the shadows patrolled,
I calmly strolled.

All this time I had been holed,
now I can pass the threshold.
A polled devil has no hold—
so lo and behold:

I can now smile,
and one day, I will
forget the cold.

I always feel people around me are right but I can't ever seem to act on their advice.

Theres a poem churning inside me for the past month and I can't seem to spill it out no matter how hard I try.

My favorite color is yellow.

I am severely overworked with the new changes on my job's work hours.

College sucks ballz.

No I'm not human — is a great game.

I'm up to date with all my manga, no more binge reading.

I was criticized about my movie opinions — I'm not creating a letterboxd account.

I feel like I seriously need to grow up, but it's hard balancing "create discipline" with "stop being harsh on yourself".

DeviantArt sucks ballz.

My favorite tastes are sour and sweet.

I wish I'd wake up in genderman's forest and be forced to collect their pronouns or die.

I love my dead girlfriend's songs — it's a great band.

I don't feel I've contributed enough to my group project even if I'm usually the one doing all the work.

I want to archive all my old poems but I don't know where — I'm not creating a tumblr account.

I'll post this on the day before I wrote it.

I hate spicy food.

Why do I keep doing this to myself.

Go away healthy and come back sick

It's what happens with school but it's also what happened with Laila on her visit to the grandparents this weekend. They kept her an extra day (through Monday at 10:30 a.m.), and she initially had some energy when she came home, but eventually fell asleep on the couch and later took a long nap in her room. I'm at the office today, but [instagram.com profile] sashagee told me that Laila is also being cuddly and taking a nap today. We've kept her home from school both days, which I'm not happy about since she's been missing a lot of school lately, but when she has a fever of 38.3°C and snot is streaming from her nose and she just wants to sleep, we can't exactly send her to school. Hopefully she feels better tomorrow.

The rest of the weekend went much better, though. We were originally going to drive Laila out to the grandparents on Friday after work, give back their car (which we've had for a couple months now), but last week we were invited to a birthday party of one of Laila's classmates, so on Friday we lit the Shabbat candles and spent the night in:

Picture )
...and then Saturday morning we went out in the fortunately not-raining weather to the Lincoln Park Zoo and wandered a bit until we found the birthday boy. This took some doing, because none of us--including the birthday family--knew that the zoo was having a Spooky Family Event, so there were hundreds of people around in costume, tables of zoo employees passing out candy, carnival rides, the works. We went from exhibit to exhibit, watching the lions who were out sunning themselves in the unseasonably-warm weather, the kids went into a big bouncy obstacle course, they ran all around the children's garden, and we rode the train for a bit when the party was over. Laila hung back a bit, but she wasn't the only kid who did, so I didn't feel too bad. Some of those kids definitely had a ton of energy.

We drove out to the suburbs, dropped off the car and Laila, went out to a lunch date--I got the poke, [instagram.com profile] sashagee got a brie burger--got some dessert and then hopped on the train. All of that meant we got home close to 5 p.m., almost in time for the party we were going to, so I finished up my exercise while [instagram.com profile] sashagee sat down for a bit, we packed up the grandma's potato soup that we were bringing, and called a Lyft to head to [twitter.com profile] spacedragon's soup party!

This all started from a Discord thread that spiraled out into dozens of soup jokes and memes, and eventually spiraled out into a bunch of people wanting to eat soup. We arrived a little later after the initial soup consumption, but there was still some lentil soup (made by [instagram.com profile] confuciousdragon) and vegan arroz caldo (made by [instagram.com profile] become_unglu3d--the chicken version had already been eaten) as well as French bread and tomato soup bread (think zucchini bread but tomato soup based), so I took a bunch of lentil soup and bread and stood around the kitchen table chatting with people about Witch Watch and soup. Despite being full, a bunch of people came back to sample [instagram.com profile] sashagee's grandma's potato soup (potatoes, milk, carrots, green onions), and we ended up staying until midnight when everyone finally ran out of energy and went home.

The next day [instagram.com profile] sashagee wasn't feeling well, so other than a quick shopping trip out to the Middle Eastern Grocery Store to restock on pita and halvah and pickles we didn't do anything. And then Monday, Laila came back sick. And so we come full circle.

Alright, workday's over, time to pick up the last CSA box of the year.

I've spent all my braincells on making an whatsapp textbot that takes emojis into battle just for the funsies and now I'm quite tired and my brain is melting.

Here's a haiku I wrote while I spent 4 hours fishing non-stop inside a videogame.

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

One benefit of Laila having a speech delay is that a lot of really cute toddler expressions that go away too fast (from a parents' perspective) have stuck around for longer. Here's a list of them at this point, so I don't forget them later:
  • Tromise: What she says when she's telling us she won't do it (whatever "it" is) again. Upgrades to "Big Tromise" when she's trying to show us how serious she is. This is already fading away into "Promise"
  • Princess Stuff: Sparkly gowns, high heels, tiaras, gloves, anything that she knows a princess would wear.
  • Hold You: In most other circumstances she's got I/you down but this one lingers when she wants me to pick her up.
  • Same same!: Any time two things are similar, usually accompanied by pointing at them and then crossing her arms and pointing at the opposite one.
  • Big Giiiiiiiirl!: Always in a sing-song voice, whenever she does something she knows is a sign of getting older that she's proud of, like putting her clothes on by herself. She'll also use "Big girl" to describe anyone acting like a grownup--I got called a big girl for putting my shoes on myself.
  • Cheese hangaburs: What she says when someone is taking a picture of her.
  • Ah-bay: The alphabet.
  • Peppersalts: Salt and pepper.
  • Little Girl: There are three classifications of people--babies, little girls, and people who are elderly. A little girl is anyone from about age 6 to 45.
  • Flamingos: "Mangos." Sometimes this becomes "Flamangos."
  • Somegetti: Spaghetti.
What a cutey. Emoji Kawaii heart

Longing for the crows I scare —
Oh lovely evening

I've been interested in haiku lately, which, of course, means I had to learn how to write haiku in both English and Portuguese. This endeavor made me realize I kinda hate the English language — mostly because it is so simple it feels limiting. While trying to learn about poetic syllables in both languages, I realized that it is much easier to find material to study in Portuguese than in English. I attribute that to the fact that poetry is a much bigger part of the culture in Brazil than in the U.S., and most, if not all, people had to learn how to read and write poetry in school, simply because it is necessary for a proper understanding of the language in its more nuanced aspects.

No vento e no sol
O lembrar de teu sorriso,
Sereno Momento

That said, poetic syllables in English are a bit “vibes-based.” You need to know which sounds form a syllable — for example, in “Longing for the crows I scare,” the separation is [Lon/ging – for – the – crows – I – scare], so all words aside from the first one are single poetic syllables. While in Portuguese that’s also kinda how it’s done, the syllables are separated much like grammatical syllable separation, with some rules added for good measure. Like in the poem above, “Sereno momento” is separated as [Se/re/no – Mo/men/to], but the “to” syllable is not considered because of the last tonic syllable “men” that comes before it. Also, in “No vento e no sol” there’s a junction in [ven/toe], so “to e” is a single poetic syllable.

All in all, haiku is a fun language exercise — kinda like a bite-sized grammatical puzzle in which you can express complex ideas using only three verses. There’s also the kigo [季語], which is a word that relates to one of the seasons. That’s because haiku is heavily associated with the “man and nature” relationship. And there’s the “stop,” which is actually a grammatical quirk of the Japanese language, but can be somewhat translated using punctuation like “—” and commas.

I still find it stupid that haiku don’t have titles or rhymes, but I guess a writer can do whatever he wants lol.
I don’t fear you, Haiku Police and Cult Writer Clowns!

Dear Author,

Hello! Thank you so much in advance for writing for me. I can't wait to see what you create.

This letter contains a list of Likes and DNWs as well as a couple of prompts. If none of the prompts catch your eye, then write whatever you like. As long as it doesn't hit any of my DNWs, we're good.

Okay! So that's it, that's the letter. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create for me <3

The pillar of fire

I don't think I wrote about this a while back when it happened, but [instagram.com profile] sashagee and I were talking about it recently. There's a song I used to sing to Laila every single night called בשם השם B'shem Hashem--here's a video from the Plague Years of our synagogue singing it--and for years [instagram.com profile] sashagee had no idea what it meant, it was just me singing in Hebrew and she thought it was some kind of lullaby. So when I told her the actual words:
בשם השם אלוקי ישראל
מימיני מיכאל ומשמאלי גבריאל
ומלפני אוריאל ומאחורי רפאל
ועל ראשי שכינת אל

B'sheim Hashem elokei yisrael,
mimini Michael umismoli Gavriel,
Umilfanai Uriel umeachorai Rafael,
v'al roshi v'al roshi shechinat el

"In the name of G-d, the G-d of Israel,
On my right hand Michael, on my left hand Gabriel,
Before me Uriel, and behind me Raphael,
And over my head, the presence of G-d"
that it's basically a prayer for protection, hoping that the archangels will surround and protect Laila while she sleeps, she told me about a dream she had about a pillar of fire hovering above Laila while she was in her crib--some obviously Biblical imagery--before she knew what I was singing about, and got very excited and told me about her dream when I explained the lyrics to her.

Laila hasn't asked about this yet, but I'll make sure to mention all this when she does.

A week in the hospital

Poor Laila.

Not because she was injured or anything, B"H. We knew this was coming--they wanted to put her in for a week and take her off her meds so they could get some good EEG images of what her seizures look like when they're uncontrolled (relatively speaking). Somewhat worryingly, it happened almost immediately after they stopped her medicines. The next day, she had two seizures in the night, and the night after she had at least one and possibly two, so they put her back on her medicines and she hasn't had one since. When they talked to [instagram.com profile] sashagee about what they found, they said that:
  • Laila's seizures are all coming from a single area in her brain, which is good. A lot of the really difficulty-to-solve problems show up if you have bilateral seizures.
  • Because Laila is currently on her fourth medicine and no previous medicine has controlled her seizures for longer than a few months, brain surgery is now on the table.
  • They have a new medicine they're putting her on that is supposed to work really well with one of her current medicine, so the doctors are hopeful that this might be a solution.
  • Laila's main doctor is also a professor of pediatric neurology, so they're the best person we could have taking care of her.
So we're waiting to see what happens with her new medicine.

That's not really why I felt bad for Laila, though--all her seizures happen during her sleep, I'm not sure she even knows she has epilepsy--why I feel bad is because she was stuck in a single room, attached to a set of cords hooked up to her head that she couldn't touch or move, for four days. I went to visit her and [instagram.com profile] sashagee every day after work, and around the halfway point of the week she got so frustrated with her cords on her head that were itching and that we kept not letting her scratch--and when she did manage to scratch one, it came off and the tech had to come back in and reattach it. She ended up crying herself to sleep after an hour and a half of fidgeting and scratching. It was really awful to watch, and I'm just glad that when she woke up the next morning I heard that she was a her normal, cheery self again.

She has an MRI next week so they can get a better image of her brain and try to figure out exactly what part of her brain is causing the seizures. Once they know that, they'll better be able to figure out what to do.
